Kabul (BNA) Afghan boxer Hamid Rahimi won the World Boxing Union (WBU) Championship by defeating his Belarusian rival in the Hamburg city of Germany, an official said on Saturday.  Rahimi outpunched Ruslan Rodivich in the 8th round late on Friday night, Olympic Committee spokesman, Mujibullah Rahan, said this news agency.  The Hamburg-based professional boxer won the WBU title due to a high degree of motivation, encouragement and support that he received from Afghanistan, the Afghan Athletes Union in Europe said.  Watched by WBU officials, Rahimi faced his Belarusian opponent in the 12-round bout that took place at the Event Centre “Le Royal” in Hamburg-Barmak, a statement from the union said.  It was an important step toward the realization of Rahimi’s dreams to host the first-ever professional boxing event in the Afghan capital Kabul under the banner of “Fight for peace”.  The Afghan boxer was awarded the WBU gold belt for winning the title.
