Afghanistan Records 3rd Wave of Coronavirus

Kabul (BNA) A consultative meeting chaired by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani was held on Saturday evening with a number of Afghan health professionals in the United States and Europe via videoconference, where the participants discussed and exchanged views regarding coordination for fighting against the third wave of the coronavirus, vaccination, oxygen delivery and hospital equipment.

At the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Public Health noted that the third wave of coronavirus has been detected in Afghanistan, moving from east to west, with most cases registered in Nangarhar, Laghman, Kandahar, Kabul, Herat and Nimroz provinces, and a small number in Khost province, according to a presidential palace statement.

The officials, as quoted in the statement, said there are 24 laboratories in 18 provinces, which according to them would be extended to all provinces by the end of June.

Meanwhile, President Ghani stressed the need to address the problem of oxygen deficiency, saying that the private sector should be involved in this regard and asked health officials to prepare a proper plan regarding the issue.

The president also emphasized that implementation of vaccine and oxygen should be prioritized, and vulnerable areas should be identified. He also said that consultations with Afghan health professionals in the United States and Europe will be continued to better manage the third wave of the coronavirus.
