Ankara Brands Taliban’s Warnings Against Turkey as ‘Symbolic’

Thursday, July 15, 2021
Kabul (BNA) Turkish officials on July 14 said that the Taliban’s warnings against Ankara regarding Turkey’s presence in Afghanistan to run and guard Kabul’s main airport are “symbolic.”
Speaking to the BBC’s Turkish service, the officials said that the Taliban doesn’t have an aggressive stance against Turkey and that the group is seeking international recognition. The officials also noted that the Taliban tries to give the message that they’re “the boss” in the country.
“It’s true that the group perceives the U.S. troops as occupying forces. However, we are in contact, and they know that we’re not there to occupy.
These are symbolic statements,” an official said, as quoted by Turkish media. “We don’t think they will have an aggressive stance against us.”
Another Turkish official said that the mission aims to benefit the people of Afghanistan.
Ankara, which has offered to run and guard the airport in the capital after NATO’s withdraws, has been in talks with United States, on aspects of financial, political and logistical support.
