Kabul (BNA) Nine children in northeastern Afghanistan were killed while walking to school on Saturday by a roadside bomb believed to have been planted by the Taliban.
Sayed Mehraj Sadat, the police chief in Takhar province, said the bomb’s intended target was most likely Afghan security forces, who often use the road the children were walking on.  No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.  Sadat said the victims were between 10 and 15 years old.  Presidential Palace in a statement condemned the incident, blaming Taliban for killing and injuring of schoolchildren in Darqad district of Takhar province.
“President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani condemns such inhuman and barbaric act of the terrorists and said targeting of the schoolchildren were indeed against Islamic teaching and Prophet Mohammad (PBUH),” the statement quoted the president as saying.
The president said Taliban could not prevent future generation’s access to education through conducting such attacks.  The group has also martyred a number of Afghan civilians in last 24 hours in different provinces of Paktika, Kapisa, Ghazni, Urozgan and Baghlan provinces, the statement added.
The president extended his condolences to families of martyrs and wished recovery for those injured in the incident, the statement added.
