Kabul (BNA) Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met UN secretary-general’s special representative for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto here in Sapidar palace yesterday morning, a statement from CE office said.
According to statement, Yammamoto shared UNAMA’s vision on electoral reform and preparation for upcoming parliamentary elections with the country’s chief executive and assured of international community’s support of National Unity Government’s (NUG) efforts for electoral reform. UN special representative for Afghanistan also hoped for soon approval of the president’s legislative decree on electoral reform by the joint committee of the parliament. Thanking international community’s support of NUG, the chief executive said that government is committed to bring fundamental reform in electoral systems, adding that many sessions have been held recently to speed up the process. “The National Unity Government awaits parliament’s decision. With approval of the legislative decree, the government would soon start the preparation for holding the parliamentary and district councils’ elections,” Dr. Abdullah said, as quoted in the statement.
UN special representative for Afghanistan also hinted on fight against corruption as the UN’s top priority, hoping that the National Unity Government take practical steps of what it has pledged to international community in fight against corruption. The chief executive said that government is committed to take practical steps on what has pledged to international community, in particular in fight against corruption and would act based on national obligation.
