Chinese Jet Came Within 10 Feet of US Military Aircraft, Says US Military

KABUL (BNA) An American military plane that was involved in a conflict with Chinese planes in disputed southern waters last week violated international laws and endangered the safety of Chinese pilots, said the spokesperson of the Ministry of Defense

A Chinese Navy J-11 fighter jet came within 10 feet of a U.S. Air Force RC-135 aircraft on Dec. 21, forcing it to perform evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision, the U.S. military said Thursday.

But Tian Junli, spokesman for China’s South Theater Command, said in a statement late Saturday that the United States had misled the public about the incident near the disputed Paracel Islands in the South China Sea.

He said that the American plane violated international laws, ignored China’s repeated warnings, and took dangerous approaches that jeopardized the safety of Chinese planes.

“The United States is deliberately misleading the public … in an attempt to confuse the international audience,” Tian said.
“We explicitly ask the American side to refrain from front-line naval and air force actions, fully comply with relevant international laws and agreements, and prevent maritime and air accidents.”
China claims almost the entire South China Sea as its sovereign territory, but parts of it are disputed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.
