Donor Countries Should Continue Assisting Afghanistan, UNFPA

Monday December 28, 2015

Kabul (BNA) In a report released recently, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said , ‘7.4 million people in Afghanistan who have sustained injuries in different natural and war incidents are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, out of which 2.2 million of them don’t have food security’.
Velferd Wickhan, An official of UNFPA in Afghanistan said, their findings indicate that in 2015, thousands Afghans mostly women displaced of their living areas due to insecurity, natural incidents and poverty. The displaced women and girl in Afghanistan are faced with problems such as health services, lack of access to education, forced marriages etc. Mr. Wickhan further said. The entity’s findings suggest that the women and children are faced with violence and are the main victims in some provinces of Afghanistan where war is going on, Mr. Wickhan added. Therefore, Afghanistan needs financial assistance of the world countries Mr. Wickhan went on to say. But unfortunately the international community’s assistance has recently declined, thus, I ask the donor countries to continue financial cooperation so the women condition gets improved in Afghanistan, Mr. Wickhan continued.
Afghanistan’s ministry of economy in cooperation with UNFPA has prepared the report, as it added that over the past year, thousands of Afghans had been victimized and displaced due to continuation of war in some provinces of the country.
In recent Taliban attack in Konduz province, 13,000 people have left their homes and sought refuge in other provinces of the country, the report further said. At the midst of the September and October, the number of war casualties in Afghanistan had reached 900 civilians, out of which around 122 of them were women, the report added. The Afghans have also sustained huge damages in natural incidents, the report stressed, adding that more than 20,000 homes had been ruined due to natural incidents in Nangarhar and Faryab provinces. This is while that one day before releasing the report, Afghanistan’s Human Rights Commission in a report declared that from 2009 up to 2015, close to 1,257,000 people have been displaced in the country and are in dire need of immediate assistance. The human rights commission added in its report that the government of Afghanistan and the donor international organizations’ works regarding displaced people of the country are inadequate. Assistance process of the poor people in Afghanistan needs huge amounts of money which is beyond the Afghan government capability. Therefore, if the donor countries stop assisting Afghanistan, we would be the witness of tragic incidents, and possibly hazardous humanitarian incidents would occur in winter.
