Defense Ministry Spokesperson Rejects Assertions Of General Kreteis Iskaparoty

Sunday, February 12, 2012
Kabul (BNA) General Mohammad Zahir Azimi spokesperson of the Defense Ministry commenting on the assertions of General Kreteis Iskaparoty on lack of capacity of the Afghan forces said that: “The national army of Afghanistan is terms of quantity, quality, training and equipment has attained the ability to ensure the domestic security without any concerns.
The outstanding example of this ability, capacity, leadership and planning of large military operations like that of Marja of Helmand province, and partner operations in Kandahar and tens of other such operations.
Especially, the implementation of the second transition responsibility during which almost over 50% of the population of Afghanistan has come under the cover of this process.
Moreover, the number of the national army indicating 185,000, adequate equipment for domestic security, training of the national army indicates that such assertions are fully unrealistic.
In case there are shortage in the air forces and armored in the national army of Afghanistan, this does not mean that it has no ability and the capacity for taking domestic security, it is expected that the international community as soon as possible equip the national army of Afghanistan.
So such assertions are baseless and the national army of Afghanistan has the capacity for ensuring security and independent operations and as per the Lisbon agreements all the security responsibility till end of 2014 will be transferred to the Afghan forces.
Time and again it was hear through the media that the US and NATO authorities have talked of the capacities and abilities of the national army of Afghanistan, however, such assertions in such moments may have political than security aspects indeed.
