UNHCR Asks Int’l Community To Pay Attention To Afghan Refugees, IDPs

Kabul (BNA): Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met the other day with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) chairman Filippo Grandi and his accompanying delegation at Sapidar palace in Kabul.
In the meeting, the country’s chief executive called Grandi as close friend of Afghanistan considering his long-term service to refugees inside of the country.
Praising UNHCR for its cooperation with the government of Afghanistan and other responsible organizations addressing refugees’ affairs, chief executive asked for further expansion and strengthening of the relations, adding that UNHCR was working with Afghanistan government in region level for addressing refugees-related affairs and displaced families. “The government of Afghanistan by having one independent ministry, one committee in council of ministers and high council for overseeing the refugees issue sees refugees-related issue as one of its working priorities and serious problem,” Dr. Abdullah said, adding that Afghanistan government was seriously making effort for honorable repatriation of refugees and addressing problems of the displaced families.
The country’s chief executive regarded visit of the UNHCR chairman to Afghanistan on international day of refugees as commitment and focusing attention of the organization to refugees-related issues.
Afterwards, UNHCR chairman said, “I have come here to my one home. My visit to Afghanistan is important. I have decided to be in Afghanistan during the international day of refugees to absorb the international attention to refugees-related issue and displaced in Afghanistan.”
He further said that the problem of refugees and displaced in Afghanistan required the international community’s aid and attention, adding that his organization was ready to work in this regard in cooperation with Afghanistan government.
The UNHCR chairman asked the government of Afghanistan for its attention to refugees issue in Warsa and Brussels conferences so that further aids would be declared by the international community and donor organizations. He promised that he would spare no effort for absorption of aids to Afghan refugees and displaced families.
The country’s chief executive assured that Afghanistan government was ready to fully cooperate with this organization and other international organizations in this regard.
