President Karzai: Any Delay In Transfer Of Bagram Prison Considered Breach Of Afghan Sovereignty

Sunday, September 09/09/2012
Kabul (BNA) In a meeting on Saturday with top NATO commander Gen. Allen and US Ambassador to Afghanistan James Cunningham, President Hamid Karzai made it clear that the Bagram Prison be transferred from International forces to Afghan authority on Monday.
The President called the transfer an important step towards the recognition of Afghan national sovereignty and instructed relevant authorities to make sure that all respective laws of the country in regard to “prison management and prisoners’ treatment” are fully enforced after the responsibility for the detention center is formally assumed.
The President strongly noted that consistent to the memorandum of understanding mutually reached by both the parties, the Prison is now supposed to be transferred to Afghan government and thus any delay in its handover is considered a breach of the Afghan national sovereignty.
President Karzai directed the relevant authorities to go ahead with the plan already in place to hold a grand ceremony on Monday to mark the formal transfer of the Prison to Afghanistan.
