Kabul (BNA) Buddha giant statues’ history goes to 2nd and 3rd centuries when Kanishka was the king. Salsal and Shahmama statues are among the remained historical monuments which have been enjoyed worldwide reputation and special position.
Recently, in 13th session of national and international experts working group which was held in Munich, Germany on 1st up to 3rd December, it was decided that the 35 meter Shahmama statue to be reconstructed and serious measures to be taken to protect the historical sites of Bamyan province. Recently, in a press conference held on 21 Qaus, Mohammad Tahir Zahir, the Bamyan provincial governor reported on reconstruction of Shahmama statue. Calling the 13th session of the Bamyan experts’ working group important, Zahir added that works are going on to construct a recreational park between the two statues, where will be named as historical park.
He also asked for practicing whatever said in the session and added that an international symposium will be held in Japan on October on reconstruction of Shahmama statue. Sayed Ahmad Hussian Ahmad Poor, head of Bamyan information and culture department said, ‘Bamyan’s historical sites have been mostly affected during domestic wars and need to be repaired.’ Calling reconstruction of Shahmama statues a good step, he added that reconstruction and repairing of these two historical statues is actually an effective step to revive civilization and history. Expressing optimism on the issue, he hoped to be soon the witness of repairing and reconstruction of the historical sites of Bamyan in practice. He also added that recent efforts on cultural section are appreciable, thus, the people, national and international organizations and other related organs are making effort to pave the way for further cultural works in Bamyan, because, holding different celebrities in this province indicate that this is a good place for cultural works. This is while that the two Buddha giant statues in Bamyan province have had 1600 years historical backgrounds until 2001, but unfortunately, they have been damaged during the Taliban regime, therefore, it is hoped that they will be reconstructed soon.
