IEC Registers More Than One Million Voters

Wednesday September 18, 2013
Kabul (BNA) On Sunday, Noor Muhammad Noor, a spokesman to the Afghanistan Independent Election Commission (IEC) said that the voter registration process moves forward successfully in 34 provinces and until now more than one million people have received voting cards from the IEC voter registration centers as the election organizing body prepares to distribute to more than four million eligible voters.
However, Mr. Noor confirmed that according to the statistics more than one million voters have registered their names to cast their ballot in the upcoming presidential and provincial councils’ election scheduled to take place on April 5th 2014.
In the meantime, a number of MPs have expressed apprehension over lack of voting registration centers in some areas of the country and demanded the IEC to expand these centers so that Afghan people be able to use their basic rights and cast their ballots in the poll.
It’s also quite important to realize that voter registration centers haven’t been opened in least seven districts in various regions of the country due to insecurity and these districts constitute Nawah of Ghazni, Disho in Zabul and Bughran in Helmand.
“We haven’t been able to transfer our material to Alasai district of Kapisa province due to insecurity including Kalmad of Nuristan, Noor Mohammad Noor said.”
As the country gets closer to the holding of 2014 presidential and provincial councils election, political coalitions and parties are trying to nominate a single candidate for elections.
