Azimi Pledges Serious Counterdrugs Campaign This Year

Kabul (BNA) Strongly asking for the people counterdrug cooperation, minister of counternarcotic, Slamat Azimi vowed to launch intense fight against the vicious phenomenon, this year.
The minister who appeared in a media conversation here in Kabul enumerated what had been done by her ministry last year, would to fight drugs and saying alongside, it had established numerous addicts treatment camps, as well as a system to help how to cover and provide report about drugs countrywide. “A draft has been set up by the ministry of counterdrugs which is expected to be presented to the donor countries funding Afghanistan in war on narcotics, after being endorsed by the presidential office,” she said adding a five-side meeting including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan and Russia was expected to be held to debate on how to fight drugs.
According to him, poppy plantation has been reduced by 48 per cent, with 38 per cent reduction in the production and 40 percent in the eradication process all over the country. Considering success in fight against drugs to be linked to the responsibility of all government organs and cooperation from the people, Mrs. Azimi asked all Afghan citizens to provide enough cooperation with the organs concerned in the campaign and promised to launch a nationwide awareness to dry the wicked phenomenon at the source. Some expert and house members blamed the neighboring and regional countries for failing to provide full cooperation with the government of Afghanistan to fight the heinous phenomenon, as the war-suffered nation could never continue campaign against drugs countrywide on its own. Ali Rahmani believed drugs would never be uprooted in Afghanistan, unless the international community including the U.S. and the UK provide enough cooperation in this respect, though he lauded the cooperation made by the U.S. and UK, but said this was not too much tangible.
He said the government should do its best under a proper plan to uproot the vicious plant, as according to him, the growing poppy and increase in the number of drugs addict as well as failure of the neighboring and regional countries in war on drugs were among the challenges faced by the government. A stable in drugs consumption, high demand and increase in the worldwide prices have been of the means and reasons of increase in poppy plantation and use of the drugs, he said asking the international community to do more with the government of Afghanistan to root out the phenomenon. Confirming what the expert detailed on how to fight the phenomenon, the house of people said drugs would remain overwhelming the nation, unless the problem was taken under serious attention from the international community for an inclusive campaign. A Kabul citizen, Hamidullah, student of a private university said wide numbers of the country’s youths are addicted with drugs, while the profits are going to the pocket of the drugs mafia. He asked the government to draw attention from the international community to fight narcotic and help Afghanistan protect of returning into the narcotic lands and defame the country across the world. Most of the drugs profits are said to have been used by the terrorists and illegal armed groups, despites the national and international efforts to put an end to the plant.
