Larger People’s Participation Strengthens Legitimacy of 2014 Presidential Elections

Kabul (BNA) The Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) has demanded the general public, civil society institutions, politicians and other social segments to contribute in persuading the people across the country to cast their ballots in April 5th presidential and provincial councils’ elections.
Deputy Head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Abdurahman Hotak has said that transparency and legitimacy of the elections will be questioned if the people not participated in the polling in majority.
On Friday a meeting was held between representatives of the probable election candidates to evaluate the modalities of the upcoming presidential contest next spring and it was attended by various representatives from the civil society institutions, representatives of election candidates and IEC officials.
In the meeting the IEC urged that holding of an acceptable poll is interrelated with larger participation of the people and each Afghan should struggle to cast in the polling so that the election is held in fair manner.
Elaborating on the topic, Abdurrahman Hotak, Deputy Head of the IEC said, “The election is a national process and role of the people is quite effective in this process, political parties and coalitions alongside civil society institutions should also strive to play their role efficiently so that the election is held in democratic fair, free and transparent manner.”
In the meantime, head of the Democracy International (DI) is distress over the challenges on way of the elections and has asked the government of Afghanistan and the IEC to work together for settlement of these issues.
Meanwhile, nationals of the country have expressed hope that the election is held in free and transparent manner so that the country witness peace full transition of political power and continue commuting towards sustainable peace, security and longstanding democracy.
Talking on the matter, Kabul Polytechnic University student, Ahmad Sherzai said, “I am so enthusiastic to cast my ballot in favor of my desired candidate in the election day, we expect many things form the upcoming elections, however, the country received many gains over the last eleven years, but they aren’t sufficient, we need to get further development, I hope that the elections honor demands of the Afghan nation, the candidates should prefer preservation of national interests.
Holding of the upcoming elections has been interpreted as an important process for Afghanistan’s future stability, the Afghan nation expect that international community closely monitor holding of free, fair and transparent elections sot that the country come out of the ongoing crisis and sustainable peace and security is restored in the war-ravaged country.
