Transparency International Assesses Reforms In Public Procurements Positive

Kabul (BNA) The meeting of the National Procurements Commission, with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on the chair spoke on issues related to recent reports of the Transparency International and approved eight contracts costing 2.4billion Afghanis, BNA reported Sunday.
Head of National Procurements Administration, Yama Yari, provided report about the recent findings of the Transparency International under ‘from commitments to practice, pursuing counter-corruption of Afghanistan,’ and said that the findings of the organization indicated that the government of national unity (NUG) had succeeded in the field of accountability, reforms in the public procurements and providence as a result of the public contracts by the national procurements commission.
In the findings, the organization has mostly focused on strengthening reforms in the procurements and expansion of the process at the provincial level, said the agency. Expressing pleasure over the well reflection of the recent report from the valid entity of transparency international’s findings, the president said the National Procurements Commission and other organs should comprehensively resort to the implementation of the contracts commitment’s release which is a firm step in the field of transparency and accountability to the people, according to the agency.
Minister of finance, Eklil Hakimi also expressed delight over the finding and said one of the commitments of the government of Afghanistan in the Brussels Conference was the release of the 75 per cent of the contracts by the end of 2017, on which the national procurements commission and other related ministries and organs should step up for the implementation. The meeting’s approved contracts included surveillance and protection of 50 km Kabul-Jalalabad highway, construction of maternity hospital in Balkh province, purchasing up to 100 thousand tons of wheat from Uzbekistan, providing uniform for the national army, amendment of road contract of Qarghaee-Mehtarlam Baba of Laghman Province, extension of Shah Joye road of Zabul province and Nangarhar’s canal underground construction project.
The commission praised the national defense ministry’s measure on provision of uniforms for the national army and providing work ground for 600 women and said the entire contracts including ten or more with the ministry of national defense should be investigated, the agency said.
“Any restriction in the ministries and government institutions should be removed in order to help restore transparency and that the prioritized contracts should be executed based on the country’s law,” said the agency.
Some other issues have also been discussed at the meeting, and required decisions were taken.
