President Ghani, German Envoy Discuss Peace Process

Kabul (BNA) President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met on Saturday evening with Markus Potzel, the Special Representative of Germany for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the Presidential Palace, a presidential press office statements said yesterday.

In the meeting that the first vice-president, acting foreign minister and Administrative Office of the President Director General were also present, Markus Potzel talked about his latest visit to Doha, Qatar.

Both sides discussed the Afghan peace process while expressing their concern over escalation of violence by the Taliban in the country, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, acting Foreign Minister, Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with Markus Potzel, Special Representative of Germany for Afghanistan, according to a MoFA statement.

At the outset, Foreign Minister thanked the people and government of Germany for their continued support and commitment to Afghanistan over the past 19 years, particularly the crucial role that Germany has played in the Afghanistan peace process, the statement added.

Minster Atmar discussed the obstacles and challenges facing the progress in peace talks, including the high level of violence, and the call for an immediate ceasefire between the Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Taliban.

Minister Atmar, as quoted in the statement, also discussed the preparation for 2020 Conference on Afghanistan due to be held in Geneva on the 23-24 November, and he shared his thoughts on aid efficiency, maintaining mutual accountability and the commitment of the Afghan Government for countering corruption and ensuring good governance.

While emphasizing Germany’s support of the Afghanistan peace process and preservation of the democratic gains, including Islamic Republic, Potzel said that his government is ready to participate and renew its commitment in the 2020 Conference on Afghanistan.

In closing, both sides stressed on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Mr. Potzel assured Minister Atmar of his country’s continued commitment and cooperation with Afghanistan.
