Thousands of Afghans Displaced Due to Conflicts: Report

Sunday, June 21, 2020
Kabul (BNA) A UN report says that thousands of people have left their homes this year due to conflict in Afghanistan, while many remained displaced across the country.
Conflict and poverty prevent them (the displaced people) from returning to their areas of origin, a statement from United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said. Almost 86,000 people have been displaced from their homes due to fighting. Around 111,000 of the 245,000 individuals displaced in the country’s West in 2018/19 mainly because of drought are still living in displacement sites — often unable to return home because of conflict. Nearly 298,000 people have returned from neighboring countries to Afghanistan so far during the current year.
They include 296,000 from Iran and 1,700 from Pakistan. Some 6,000 people have also been deported from Turkey in 2020, while a small number also came back from Europe.
The 2020 Humanitarian Needs Overview estimates that close to a million people on the move will need humanitarian assistance by the end of the year.
