Gov. Committed To Protect Journalists Security, Freedom Of Expression, Leaders

Kabul (BNA) Attack on Moby Group staffs received national and international condemnations and the country’s citizens with a single voice asked the government to safeguard freedom of expression and protect journalists’ life in the country.
The government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan considered attack on media indeed attack on the country’s constitution, adding that National Unity Government is obliged to protect and support mass media in the country.
“Freedom of expression guaranteed in the national constitution.” It would be never dealt and should be basically respected”, President Ghani said in a statement released by the presidential press office, adding that the NUG is committed to safeguard freedom of expression and people with the single voice marginalize those not willing peace and involved in destructive activities.
Considering security and protecting of journalists as their main responsibility, the Ministry of Interior officials saying that Police has begun investigations and would soon release the report.
“The police forces trying their best to provide security for the activities of the country’s mass media as well as suppressing any threats aiming to target journalists”, MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said in a press conference, adding that such attacks on media and any dimensions of the society would not affect people’s determination for building a peaceful and stable future.
“The Ministry of Interior in close coordination with the country’s media would seek ways to fight any security threat”, Sediqqi added.
Calling attack on media in fact attack on the people of Afghanistan, the country’s Journalists’ Federation says that such targeting would make relations between the Taliban and the media to be further altered.
“We ask the NUG to secure the environment for the activities of mass media in the country and recognize as well as prosecute those elements within the government that making propagandas and plans in the favor of the enemies of the country”, Rahimullah Samandar member of journalists’ federation said in a media gathering after the incident.
The National Assembly of Afghanistan has also condemned the attack on Moby Group vehicle while calling it attack on the freedom of expression in the country. “Those reflecting the truth would be alive forever and the people of Afghanistan consider them as the martyrs of peace and freedom.”
Meanwhile, the National Security Council of the United Nations in its strongest terms condemned the attack and called it a war crime while asking the government of Afghanistan to spare no efforts in providing security to the media activists in the country.
“No terrorist actions would stop Afghanistan from moving toward stability and peace which is being supported by the international community”, NSC of the United Nations said in a statement. The Human Rights Watchdog has also said that such attacks on media indeed undergo the freedom of expression in Afghanistan.
A number of the country’s political parties have asked the government to provide security for the activities of the mass media in the country. The newly established “Afghanistan’s Protection and Stability Council” which has many of the former Jihadi leaders as its members urging government to thwart any threats aiming to target journalists.
“Freedom of expression and media have been playing key role in boosting the spirit of convergence in the country. Targeting media is indeed targeting the last fourteen year’s achievements of the government of Afghanistan”, Massoud Tarshtwal spokesman of the council said in a media gathering, adding that the APSC demands peace and stability in the country as well as introduction of those involved in peace talks. Attack on Moby Group vehicle in Kabul was condemned by the country’s civil society institutions, Women Rights’ advocates, governors and citizens while calling it as inhuman act and against freedom of expression as well as all religious norms. On last Wednesday, Jan 20th, a mini-bus carrying employees of the Moby Media Group and Tolo TV was targeted by a suicide bomber in Darul Aman road of Kabul that killed 7 people including three women and injured 27 others.
