Adela Raz Presents Credentials to UN Secretary-General

Kabul (BNA) Newly appointed Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to United Nations Adela Raz presented her credentials to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Kabul said.
In a statement, the MoFA said Adela Raz conveyed to the UN secretary-general appreciation from President Ashraf Ghani of the international organization’s continued support to Afghanistan since 2001.
Raz noted the symbolic nature of presentation of her credentials as the first female permanent representative of Afghanistan on International Women’s Day.  In response, the secretary-general underlined the strong support of the organization got gender equality.
Antonio Guterres, during his meeting with Raz, high-lighted his keen attention to developments in the Afghan peace process.  A successful and inclusive process could lead to sustainable and dignified peace in Afghanistan, he said.
Despite the current situation in Afghanistan, the UN chief lauded the positive and vital role of the country in implementation of international agendas.
Raz appreciated Guterres’ points and highlighted Afghanistan’s role as a founding member of the UN.  She stressed the importance of key issues like gender equality, specifically protection of women’s rights and their achievements over the last 17 years.
Prior to her appointment as permanent Afghan envoy to the UN, Raz served as spokesperson and director of communications for former (resident Hamid Karzai in 2013.
Following the election of Ghani, she was appointed as chief of staff at the Administrative Affairs Office in November 2014.  She has also been deputy minister for economic cooperation at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ambassador Raz is the 12the Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations since the organization’s foundation in 1945.  She succeeded Mahmoud Saikal.
