Steel Factory to Open in Kandahar

KANDAHAR (BNA) The construction of building a steel factory and production of steel in Kandahar starts today.
This factory will be able to produce up to 7 tons of steel in per hour.
The steel plant will be built on a 12-acre site in the Shor’Andam industrial town of Kandahar.
The private sector will spend two and a half million dollars to build this factory.
Seyed Mohammad Sarwar Agha Amani, head of the Kandahar Chamber of Mines and Industries, told BNA that the factory melts idle scrap metal and produces skewers.
The factory’s hour production is called up to seven tons of skewers, but its owners say they could increase production to 100 tons a day or more if their business booms.
Most of the building materials needed in Afghanistan are imported from neighboring countries.
Although there are only a handful steel factories in Afghanistan, economists believe that with government support for the industry, Afghanistan could gradually become self-sufficient in manufacturing steel.
