UNGA Deals Amid World Major Challenges

Tuesday, September 20, 2016

Kabul (BNA) The UN General Assembly is due to start in current week in New York, US.
The assembly holds once every year with the participation of the world governments heads or leaders. This time, the Afghan second vice president Mohammad Sarwar Danesh would lead the Afghan delegation in the UNGA. Some people called this gesture due to occupation of president Ghani in preparation programs for Brussels conference plus signing of peace deal with HIA or even stronger probability of advent of second anniversary and concerns from threats of politicians outside the government. In general, experts express different opinions.
Journalist and political analyst Ahmad Sayeed Haqiqi said, in the last over eight months president Ghani was involved in peace talks with Hekmatyar led Hezb-e-Islami party as a peace deal is expected to be finalized and inked soon. Once at the threshold of Eid ul-Adha, signing of this peace agreement was delayed due to mysterious reasons. Maybe one of the reasons that president Ghani preferred to send his second vice president to UNGA was to attend personally the signing ceremony of this agreement. The peace agreement, Haqiqi added may not have direct impact on restoration of peace and security immediately but would have this advantage that could be a winning curd for the president in year’s long peace talks. The sideline meetings at the UNGA and the world leader’s visits to each other have not produced fruitful results yet for Afghanistan and failed to be considered as an achievement for this war-ravaged land. Because the opinion of the US president on the NUG is clear and the shaped strategy in this connection is not changing and the sideline meetings cannot leave impact on these strategies.
Analysts believe that usually the highest authorities of the UN member countries attend UN General Assembly, because the world general diplomacy is taking shape in such gatherings. The UN annual assemblies are an opportunity for some countries including Afghanistan in which the world political leaders can closely work on strengthening of relations with other countries. Non-presence of the Afghan president could damage the position of Afghan government except with logical reasons. The UN general assembly is one of the most important events of this world body in which the participants report on their activities, suggestions and challenges. The Afghan president could have complained on Pakistan’s instrumental policies towards the terrorists groups. Last year, the NUG CE, Dr. Abdullah had attended the UN general assembly. Ex-president Hamid Karzai had regularly attended this event during his tenure and held several meetings with the world leaders.
