Information Technology A Top Priority, President Ghani

Kabul (BNA) Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, via a video conference delivered remarks to the participants of the 10th National Information Technology Conference that was held in Kabul University Thursday.
Thanking Professor Peroz Nazir the founder of this conference, the president said, “Information technology is a top priority of the society; and in absence of a national strategy in this regard, governance and economy cannot function well.” Pointing out on a national strategy that Afghanistan lacks in this field, President urged on identification of Afghan internal and external capacities in the area of information technology so that Afghanistan could gain proper strategic advice in this respect. President Ghani described the information technology as an area where the notional and intellectual capacities of the youth can be utilized, and stressed on access of the youth, particularly the universities and higher education institutions’ students, to information technology.
The President further underlined the need of Afghanistan’s universities to be affiliated via information technology to the world credible universities.
Afghanistan President asked the conference participants to develop an immediate plan so that the government could invest on the best talents in this field. Independence in the area of information technology can lay the foundation of independence in the areas of economics, human resource, strengthening the young generation, women and people with disability involvement in different capacities, and in turn change other aspects of our people’s life, President Ghani stated.
At the end of his remarks, the president asked the conference participants to come up with a precise review of the problems in the area of information technology so that proper measures could be taken to remove the concerned problems and bring about welfare for Afghans.
Mohammad Osman Babury, Acting Minister of Higher Education, briefed the President on this conference and said that the National Information Technology Conference with the support of Berlin Technical University is held on annual basis since 2005 where specific issues are discussed with support of Kabul University’s professors and students.
