Dr. Rassoul Meets UN Human Right High Commissioner

Kabul (BNA) Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Zalmai Rassoul met with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Navi Pillay, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, yesterday afternoon.
In this meeting, the UN Secretary’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Jan Kubis and Chairman of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, Dr. Sema Samar were present.
Both sides discussed and exchanged views on a wide range of issues including women’s rights, protection of human rights, development and support in various areas over the last decade.
Dr. Rassoul said that the Afghan people have had historical significant achievements in the area of human rights development over the past 12 years, and as a result of these development most Afghan girls and women are remarkably involved in the political, economic, cultural and social spheres.
Dr. Rassoul also said that one of the Afghan government’s main tasks is not only to protect the achievements made in different areas including human rights, but to take decisive steps toward resolving problems that Afghan people still facing in order to ensure lasting peace, security, progress and democracy.
The Foreign Minister reiterated that under the framework of the peace process, the Afghan government will never make any deals on the human rights of the Afghan people with anyone.
Ms. Pillay pointed out the fact that the Independent Human Rights Commission of Afghanistan has the highest reputation in the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions since 2007 and it’s a great prestige for the Afghan people.
Dr. Rassoul said that the Afghan government aims that the Independent Human Rights Commission of Afghanistan will keep its international A-status reputation in the future, too.
Ms. Pillay committed that the United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights will continue its cooperation with Afghanistan.
