259 Polling Stations Under Serious Security Threats, MoI

Kabul (BNA) The independence Election Commission of Afghanistan (IEC) has said that the security institutions will not be able to provide security to 259 polling booths in various provinces.
The IEC said of Friday that the concerned institution had sent a letter to the ministry of interior five months ago containing list of nearly 7,000 polling stations and in response to the letter submitted by the IEC, the ministry of interior has said that from the overall polling centers 259 are under serious security threats. In the meantime, the ministry of interior affairs has assured it will try to get advantage from the time to ensure security of 259 polling stations. The Independent election commission of Afghanistan has always demanded security of the election. In a recent report, the MoI has said that 259 polling, stations are under serious security threats in the provinces of Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, Zabul, Noristan, Helmand, Kandahar, Logar and Farah. The IEC has asked the security organ to accelerate efforts for safety of the elections in 2014 so that nationals of the country cast their votes under the peaceful environment and mark destiny of the country with their own hands. Elaborating on the topic, the IEC secretariat Chief Ziaulhaq Amarkhail said. “Analysis of security institutions of the country shows that from the overall polling stations, 259 are under serious security threats”.
Previously, security institutions of the country had announced that they will joint work with the foreign troops to ensure security of the polling stations. But, in a fresh report, the MoI has said that some of the polling stations are under serious security threats. Talking on the topic, Sidiq Sidiqi, spokesman of the ministry of interior said that security institutions are working on the security programs to ensure safety of the polling stations from insurgent threats. The IEC in the past had said that insecurity in some districts could prevent the election organizing body to put the ballot box for voting. Among these all, contribution and participation of women in the upcoming presidential and provincial councils` election have been described very important. Talking on the topic, member of the House of Representatives Fawzia Kofi said, “we have achieved satisfactory outcomes from the political process and it’s very vital to seek women contribution in the political process of the country. Holding presidential elections is   one of the effective steps for expansion and development of democracy in the country. In the light of ongoing juncture, we need to participate in the upcoming elections in majority in order to develop democratic values and we should struggle to vote in the election in majority so that the country moves forward towards socio-economic development. The Afghan people expect that international community in the view of current scenario helps Afghanistan for holding of free, fair and transparent elections in 2014, because, Afghanistan strongly needs global cooperation to foil the conspiracies of the enemy that intends to harm the democratic process.
