FM Atmar, Lyons Discuss Regional Consensus for Afghan Peace Process

Kabul (BNA) Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar met with Deborah Lyons, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan here in his office yesterday.

The two sides discussed the Afghan peace process, emphasizing the constructive role of the United Nations in strengthening and facilitating peace talks, according to a MoFA statement.

Speaking about his working trips to countries in the region, the Foreign Minister said that the regional consensus is expanding on achieving a political solution that guarantees lasting peace in the country.

Lyons, as quoted in the statement, also stressed the role of countries in the region and the international community in ensuring lasting peace in Afghanistan, and reaffirmed the United Nations’ continued efforts to expand regional and global consensus.

The two sides also considered the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2513 as important for reducing violence, securing ceasefires, preventing Afghan territory to be used by terrorists, pursuing meaningful negotiations, achieving a peaceful solution and ensuring lasting peace in Afghanistan.
