Kabul (BNA) The International Rescue Committee (IRC) says the freezing of Afghanistan’s monetary has hampered the country’s health sector and further exacerbated poverty.
Expressing concern over the current situation in Afghanistan, the committee says that more than 90% of the country’s health centers have either closed or are on the verge of closing, and millions will be deprived of health services due to the closure of these centers.
“Afghanistan has relied on foreign aid for the past two decades for government services such as health workers and teachers,” the International Rescue Committee said. “The previous government received 75 percent of its spending from foreign aid to advance government services”
The International Rescue Committee has called for the closure of these health centers to deal with the coronavirus and severe crises such as malnutrition and other diseases.
The agency said that the cessation of international aid and the freezing of Afghanistan’s monetary have led to the closure of health centers and the deterioration of the economic situation in the country. The International Committee also expressed concern about drought, the current famine and the possibility of a fourth corona wave in Afghanistan.
“Lack of cash means Afghans are losing their money, but the price of food and medical supplies has risen,” the International Rescue Committee said, citing a UN report. Afghanistan will experience severe poverty and it is estimated that by mid-2022, ninety-seven percent of Afghans will be in poverty, and the current crisis in this country has also had a negative impact on humanitarian institutions.
The Ministry of Public Health denies the possibility of closing 90% of the country’s health centers, but insists on keeping it active with the help of international organizations.
