LRH Doctors Succeed In Treating Afghan Girl Child

Tuesday, July 14, 2015
PESHAWAR (BNA) After suffering from dry cough for the past three years, doctors in Afghanistan and Pakistan could not succeed in diagnosing the cause of persistent cough of a nine-year old Afghan girl. She was, however, lucky when her parents took her to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar where the doctors diagnosed the cause of her disease and successfully removed a foreign metal body. Sonia, daughter of Abdul Jamil, an Afghan national, said he had almost lost hopes about the recovery of his daughter as he had become tired of taking her to each and every doctor in his native Afghanistan. A few days ago when condition of his daughter deteriorated due to non-stop cough, he took her to Peshawar and admitted at the Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC).The doctors, after thorough examination and investigations including CT Scan of chest, showed a large metallic foreign body (one-inch nail) in her lung.
She underwent bronchoscopy procedure but due to long history of infection in her left lung, the procedure was abandoned and she was referred to thoracic surgeon in LRH, who advised another attempt by an ENT unit in LRH by Associate Professor Dr Niamatullah Khan specifically. The bronchoscopy was done on July 11 and the metallic foreign body was removed, with uneventful recovery as well as saving the patient from major lung operation.  Dr Niamatullah, who is presently working as associate professor and in charge of ENT and head and neck surgery, said the procedure was conducted at the LRH. A fellow of Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, Dr Niamatullah also obtained European board examination in ENT, head and neck and facial plastic surgery from the European Union. Having done his fellowships from Germany, France and Switzerland, Dr Niamatullah Khan has developed these services in LRH with his vast experience in endoscopic sinus, rigid bronchoscopy and head and neck surgery. The doctor is also the pioneer of beginning of endoscopic sinus and eye surgery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Afghan national and his family thanked Pakistan, particularly Dr Niamatullah, for providing the best available services to them.
