Ministry Reports 1,243 New COVID-19 Cases, 84 Deaths in Afghanistan

Kabul (BNA)  The Ministry of Public Health on Sunday reported 1,243 new cases of COVID-19 out of 4,642 samples tested in the last 24 hours. Although this is a slight decrease in the number of daily cases, health officials still warned the public against failing to take precautions to contain the spread of the virus.

The ministry also reported 84 deaths and 804 recoveries from COVID-19 in the same period.

The numbers of daily COVID-19 deaths have remained almost the same in the last three weeks, but recoveries have increased over the last few days.

So far, Afghanistan has recorded 125,937 cases and the total deaths has reached 5,283.

Lack of oxygen has turned into a main problem for the treatment of COVID-19 patients at government hospitals. To overcome this challenge, the acting minister of public health, Wahid Majroh, said there is a need for full cooperation by the people to wear masks at least when they are outside their homes and to follow other health advice introduced by the ministry.

Efforts to fight COVID-19 now face a new challenge: The emergence of new cases of a COVID-19 related fungal disease called as “black fungus.” Majroh said wearing masks can help in containing the spread of the fungal disease.

Figures by Johns Hopkins University indicate that the number of deaths from COVID-19 globally is more than 3,971,956 and the number of known global corona virus cases is 183,505,842.
