MoIC to Develop Cultural Ties With Sri Lanka

Kabul (BNA) The Ministry of Information and Culture will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cultural cooperation with Sri Lanka, Bakhtar News Agency (BNA) reported Sunday.

According to the agency, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka have a long-standing cultural and historical relationship and the MoU on cultural cooperation will be signed soon between the two countries, said Mohammad Tahir Zuhair, the Acting Minister of Information and Culture, during a meeting with the Sri Lankan ambassador to Kabul. Sharing Information about Buddhism, the acting minister said: “There are many Buddhist monuments in Afghanistan and Bamyan is one of the important centers in terms of historical monuments.”

The acting minister called for the development of cultural relations between the two countries as saying: “We want Sri Lanka to cooperate in the fields of music, theater, restoration of antiquities and other cultural sectors, and the display of Buddhist works in that country.” Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Kabul stressed the need to strengthen ties between the two countries and noted that Afghanistan and Sri Lanka had long-standing cultural ties and his country is interested in cooperation with Afghanistan’s cinema, publications and other cultural areas.”

“We encourage tourists to visit Afghanistan’s Buddhist and Islamic cultural heritage,” he said as quoted by the agency.

He invited the Acting Minister of Information and Culture to visit Sri Lanka at due time to visit the country’s cultural heritage.
