Preserving Afghanistan’s cultural heritage — including archeological sites, cultural artifacts, and immaterial attributes of its diverse cultures — can boost tourism and help promote tolerance and understanding in the country. Cultural preservation is central to nation-building and vital at a time when Afghans hope for a return to stability amid ongoing peace efforts.
The safeguarding of cultural heritage holds an important position in order to strengthen the sense of national identity.
Afghanistan, situated at an important junction on the ancient Silk Roads, has been the crossroads of cultures since time immemorial.
Its unique cultural heritage reflects a history that is marked by the complex indigenous encounters between Achemenid Persia, Alexandrian Greece, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam.
However, due to prolonged armed conflict and fanaticism, much of this outstanding cultural heritage has been destroyed.
The history and archaeology of Afghanistan stretches back more than 40 millennia, from Paleolithic sites where stone tools illustrate aspects of the lives of the first human settlements in Afghanistan.
Culture can play a significant role to foster a sense of national identity by underlining the existence of shared history and cultural traditions, and by helping to better understand where a society has come from, and where it can go in the future. It can help develop a positive discourse on ethnic diversity and its benefits as a source of cultural pride, national identity and peace-building, as well as the economic empowerment of Afghan people.
As in many other countries around the world, preserving Afghanistan’s cultural heritage will inevitably attract tourists. The sector was starting to take off before war broke out in the late 1970s.
Thus, there is need that people beside relevant governmental organs should protect and prevent cultural heritages and ancient relics from destruction and damages.
