President Ghani Praises International Supports for Afghan Returnees

Kabul (BNA) President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees on Sunday evening at the Presidential Palace and discussed issues pertaining to the Afghan refugees and internally displaced persons in the country, a statement said yesterday.

Both sides also talked over the Afghan peace process, voluntarily repatriation of Afghan refugees from Iran and Pakistan after peace as well as the Afghan government’s programs developed to address the needs of internally displaced persons, the presidential press office said.

President Ghani articulated Afghanistan National Peace and Development Framework II highlighting its main components including peace-building, market-building, development initiatives, and creating employment opportunities for the Afghan returnees, according to the statement.

President of Afghanistan and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees exchanged views over the Afghan government’s commitments for peace and stressed that sustainable peace in the country and ending the war and conflict by the Taliban will prevent people from immigrating and leaving their homes and homeland.

President Ghani spoke about the Afghan diaspora across the world describing them as a human capital that can contribute to Afghanistan’s economic growth. He underscored that these talents and their expertise can play a significant role in development and progress of Afghanistan.

President Ghani attached great importance to the regional connectivity as well as expanding trade and economic cooperation in the region and added that efforts are in place to end the war and pave the grounds for repatriation of Afghan refugees.

The President said that land distribution to Afghan returnees and IDPs is among the top plans of the Afghan government.

Extending gratitude to the international community for supporting Afghan returnees, President Ghani underscored the need for continuation of these support and assistances.

President Ghani termed the war as the main driver of immigration and displacement of Afghans and said, “The war must end and Taliban must seize the opportunity created for peace so that no Afghan is compelled to leave the country and live a life of misery abroad as dignity of every Afghan citizen is important for us.”

The President also discussed plan on re-integration of the Taliban combatants as a key component of the government’s peace-building plan.

He said that upon establishing peace, the government of Afghanistan is ready to include a large number of Taliban combatants and their family members in the economic cycle of the country, pursuing an objective to help the Taliban combatants return to a normal life.

President Ghani said that job creation and service delivery are another component of the peace-building initiative on which the government is relentlessly working.
