President Ghani, Uzbek FM Discuss Bilateral Relations

Kabul (BNA) President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with Abdulaziz Kamilov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan on Tuesday at the Presidential Palace and discussed expansion of bilateral ties, regional cooperation and Afghanistan’s peace process.

Kamilov presented the President of Uzbekistan’s invitation letter to President Ashraf Ghani, inviting him to attend a conference titled “Regional Connectivity; Common Challenges and Opportunities” in Tashkent, according to a presidential palace statement.

Presidents of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan will be joined by prime ministers of India and Pakistan, and foreign ministers and representatives of the United States, the Russian Federation and the European Union in the conference that is set to be held in July 2021, the statement added.

The two sides, according to the statement, also exchanged views on implementation of MOUs in economic and cultural areas that had been signed between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan during the last two years.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan underscored the need for reduction of violence and ensuring a sustainable and dignified peace in Afghanistan.

The Uzbek FM also held separate meetings with Afghan National Security Adviser and Foreign Minister, discussing key regional issues as well as enhancing bilateral relations.
