FM Atmar, Lyons Discuss Peace Process

Kabul (BNA) Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar spoke with Deborah Lyons, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, about the role of the organization in the Afghan peace process and the success of peace talks, a statement from the MoFA said yesterday.

The Foreign Minister spoke about the outcome of the Moscow Troika Summit and the preparations for the forthcoming Turkey-hosted peace talks and called for a regional and international consensus for the success of the process. FM Atmar also emphasized the constructive role of the United Nations in strengthening the peace process, the statement added.

In addition to talking about Turkey’s readiness for Afghan peace talks, Lyons stressed the importance of the role of the region and the international community in securing lasting peace in Afghanistan and assured the United Nation’s continued cooperation for peace and consensus in the country.

Both sides also stressed the need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2513 and wished the peace process success, based on the will of the Afghan people.
