FM Atmar, Tajikistan’s Yatimov Discuss Bilateral Relations

Kabul (BNA) Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Haneef Atmar, met with the Chairman of the National Security Committee of the Republic of Tajikistan, Saymumin Yatimov, on Sunday evening to discuss important security issues and strengthen political and economic relations between Kabul and Dushanbe.

FM Atmar, as quoted in the MoFA statement yesterday, expressed his condolences on the demise of Sharafuddin Imam, former Ambassador of Tajikistan to Kabul, and praised the support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan for Afghanistan’s position in the national and international arenas.

The Foreign Minister stressed the importance of establishing security and border commissions between Afghanistan and Tajikistan at the level of the National Security Council and the border ministries of the two countries for the exchange of information and security cooperation, adding that will raise the issue during the Afghanistan-US-Tajikistan trilateral meeting.

FM Atmar hinted at the importance of joint economic projects, including the Dasht-e-Jam project to generate electricity, irrigate and mechanize agriculture, connecting Tajikistan through Afghanistan to South Asia, establishing fiber-optic network, the Tajik-Afghanistan-Iran railway, CASA-100 and TUTAP power transmission projects, describing them as vital for enhancing bilateral trade and friendly ties between the two countries.

The head of Tajikistan’s National Security Committee reiterated his country’s readiness to expand political and security relations and co-operation with Afghanistan and assured the foreign minister of Dushanbe’s support for peace talks and finding a political solution to the current crisis in Afghanistan, the statement added.
